COURSE OVERVIEW: This seminar invites you to examine your assumptions, experiences, curiosities, goals, and ideas about teaching writing, literature, reading, and thinking in the context of your own classroom. Whether you’re new to teaching or a veteran teacher, I trust you come to this class seeking new (or renewed) wisdom, patience, knowledge, insight and even some practical application to teach for engaged learning. What this term promises is a chance to deepen our insight and under-standing regarding: What does it take to make you more confident and competent as a teacher? Who can you turn to for support, guidance, and conversation? What research and resources can answer your teaching questions?

In addition to developing a clearer vision of what you know and believe about teaching (and learning), you will select an aspect of your teaching that you’re willing to examine and revise (preferably something you aren’t happy about, aren’t comfortable with, or feel needs some focused and thoughtful consideration). We’ll read, write, and talk -- and you’ll observe, interview, and write -- in the process of discovering some answers to your most pressing teaching questions. All of this is intended as an intense opportunity to re-think your own teaching of English and to revisit the relationship between teaching content and teaching students.
